Malang Mural Competition #2

The images here are fotos of some of the wall paintings from the 2nd Malang Mural Competition held in mid 2006. The murals were done on a boundary wall of the new Ken Arok Stadium on the edge of Malang. Recurring themes are the local football teams Arema (symbol is a lion) and Persema, the figure of Ken Arok, who was the founder of the Singosari kingdom (1222) based near Malang, masks, and Javanese culture in general. The mayor (Walikota) of Malang, Penny Suparto, appears in a number of the murals. The quality and vitality of these murals show that there are many excellent artists currently living in Malang.
