David Armstrong studied in Indonesia with ACICIS for two years; one year at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta in 2002, and one year in 2006 at Muhammadiyah University in Malang. In 2007 he was awarded a degree in Asian Studies specialising in Indonesia from Murdoch University in Western Australia.

In 2011, while working for ACICIS at Murdoch University, David was awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Support Services. He used the generous prize to visit and photograph murals at schools in Yogyakarta, Central Java. This website is a photo-essay about Indonesian school murals and contains the photographs taken by David Armstrong during his trip to Yogyakarta in 2011.

The photographs paint a picture of the Javanese by using their own images. This is how the Javanese see themselves, though it may be an idealised perspective. It is possible that this website may contain the only available record anywhere in the world of these school murals from Yogyakarta.
